If you want an AI agent that actually does things (reads email, updates a CRM, posts to Slack), you need an automation platform behind it. n8n, Make and Zapier are the big three. The key difference for agents is how they count usage, because agents loop and call many tools.

Quick verdict

  • n8n: best for technical teams and heavy agent workloads. It bills per full workflow execution, not per step, and you can self-host the free Community Edition.
  • Make: best visual canvas for complex scenarios on a budget, with a free plan of 1,000 credits/month.
  • Zapier: the biggest app catalogue (9,000+ apps) and the easiest start, with Zapier Agents and MCP included on every plan.

n8n: executions, self-hosting and MCP

n8n's pricing page states it plainly: an execution is one run of your entire workflow, no matter how many steps it has. For an agent that calls five tools in a loop, that is a big advantage over per-step billing. All plans include unlimited users and workflows and every integration. The Cloud plans include the AI Agent node, an MCP Server Trigger and MCP Client, and human approval for tool calls. Hosted data is stored in the EU (Frankfurt). If you are comfortable running a server, the self-hosted Community Edition is free.

Make: the visual canvas

Make (formerly Integromat) bills in credits: each action a module performs uses credits, most use 1, and routers and error handlers are free. The free plan includes 1,000 credits a month. If you run out, scenarios pause and incoming webhooks are queued. You can buy extra credits in bundles. Its canvas is the clearest way to see branches, iterators and aggregators, which helps when debugging what an agent did. Make has a start-up plan with 50% off Business for companies under 20 employees, if they qualify.

Zapier: catalogue and simplicity

Zapier connects 9,000+ apps. Each successful action step uses a task. Triggers and built-in tools (Formatter, Paths, Filter, Delay…) do not count. A Zapier MCP tool call costs 2 tasks. Zapier Agents is a separate product billed in "activities" (Free 400/month, Pro 1,500/month) and does not use your task allowance. New accounts get a 14-day Professional trial with no card needed.

Which one for AI agents?

  • Many steps per run, high volume, or you want to own your infrastructure → n8n.
  • Complex visual logic and a tight budget → Make.
  • You need a niche app connector or want the quickest setup → Zapier.
